At level 20, you can potentially have an entire army of up-armored super-wights (Create Undead + Undead Thralls extra HP and extra damage give them scale mail and dual shortswords for melee and longbows for ranged combat under Xanathar's rules you can forge them all Longbows +1 at two weeks per longbow) under permanent Geas and long-term Mass Suggestion (Mass Suggestion IX "Join my army of the living dead!" lasts for a year and a day), plus as many Planar Bound air elementals, Nycaloths, etc. Hundreds of skellies are for chumps and mid-level Necromancers. ![]() But they're also really stupid and need lots of babysitting.) (Another minor advantage of skeletons over wights is that skeletons do not have disadvantage in sunlight. ![]() The main attraction of skellies isn't so much that they are powerful, as minions go, but that they are cheap to produce and relatively low on hassle factor, compared to wights and demons. If you average out the damage from the skellies, you're looking at around ~700 damage per round vs a single target AC 20. Necromancer with 160 skeletons all armed with longbows, a horde of zombies (only limit is the DM, as there's no cap on the spell), and a Mummy Lord in thrall.
